During the IV Global Media Forum in Shusha, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev reaffirmed his country’s firm support for Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity. As reported by Ukrinform, Aliyev stated that it is impossible to defeat a nation striving for freedom and sovereignty. He emphasized that no country can impose its will upon a people fighting for their identity.
Aliyev reiterated that his assessment of the Russia-Ukraine war remains consistent: Ukraine must not concede its territories under external pressure. Drawing on Azerbaijan’s own experience with years of territorial occupation, he argued that any peace deal accepting the status quo of occupation would be a mistake. He called for an immediate end to the hostilities, describing it as both his official state position and his personal moral stance.
The Azerbaijani leader pledged that his country would continue to provide aid to the Ukrainian people, driven by genuine solidarity with those suffering from the conflict. This diplomatic support comes despite ongoing tensions with Moscow, highlighted by recent Russian strikes on Azerbaijani business assets, such as SOCAR gas stations in Ukraine. Baku has formally protested these incidents, demanding thorough investigations and accountability from the Russian side.
As the conflict continues, Aliyev’s clear message of support for Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders remains a significant diplomatic anchor. By rejecting the legitimacy of the Russian occupation and advocating for a just peace, Azerbaijan aligns itself with international law and the principles of sovereignty. While Ukraine continues to bolster its defenses against ongoing aggression, such diplomatic endorsements remain crucial for sustaining the international consensus needed to secure a lasting victory.
