Hybrid War in the Rear: SBU Detains Arsonist Targeting Ukrainian Military Vehicles in Kharkiv

Затримання диверсанта, який палив авто ЗСУ у Харкові

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has officially confirmed the arrest of a Kharkiv resident who was systematically destroying military vehicles on behalf of Russian intelligence services. This case highlights the persistent efforts of the aggressor to conduct sabotage operations deep within Ukrainian territory, targeting assets essential for defense.

The suspect, currently unemployed, sought “easy money” through Telegram channels, where he was recruited by Russian handlers. His primary task was to locate and track Ukrainian Armed Forces pickup trucks undergoing maintenance in Kharkiv after returning from the front line. Following instructions provided by his handlers, the individual manufactured incendiary devices and set fire to the vehicles, filming the arson to provide proof of his “work” to the Russian side.

The SBU’s military counterintelligence was able to identify and apprehend the suspect swiftly. During the search of his residence, investigators confiscated the smartphone used for coordinating with the enemy and documenting the sabotage. The man has been charged under multiple articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, including the obstruction of the legal activities of the Armed Forces and intentional destruction of property. He faces severe prison sentences for his actions.

This incident is part of an ongoing security operation aimed at dismantling Russian agent networks within Ukraine. Intelligence agencies continue to warn citizens that recruitment through social media channels under the guise of quick income is a common tactic used by the FSB to involve vulnerable individuals in serious crimes against their own state. The SBU remains vigilant, tracking potential threats to ensure that such sabotage attempts are neutralized before further damage occurs, proving that the “digital front” of the war is as critical as the physical one.
