High Treason Under the Guise of Unemployment: Russian FSB Agent Sentenced to 15 Years in Odesa

SSU officers arresting a Russian FSB agent in Odesa

The Ukrainian justice system continues to hand down strict sentences to individuals involved in espionage and treason. On Friday, April 24, it was announced that a Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) agent, initially arrested in November 2022, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. The culprit was charged with adjusting missile and drone strikes on the city of Odesa. The official statement was released by the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), highlighting the ongoing efforts to neutralize internal threats during the full-scale invasion.

According to the investigation, the convicted individual was a local unemployed man whom Russian special services had recruited. His motivation was rooted in a false promise made by his handlers: he was guaranteed a “high-ranking position” within the occupation administration should Odesa fall into Russian hands. This illusion ultimately drove him to commit high treason against his own country.

The agent’s modus operandi involved extensive covert surveillance. Driving his personal vehicle around the regional center, he used a hidden dashcam to record the exact locations of Ukrainian Defense Forces bases. He carefully stored the gathered coordinates and video evidence on a memory card, intending to securely transfer this critical intelligence to his Russian curator.

The consequences of a successful transfer could have been devastating. The Russian military planned to use this precise intelligence to direct heavy missile weaponry and kamikaze drones at the deployment sites of Ukrainian troops. Fortunately, SSU counterintelligence officers were one step ahead. They intercepted the traitor precisely when he attempted to hand over the classified data to the aggressor state.

The court found the Russian agent guilty of high treason committed under martial law (Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The sentence dictates 15 years of imprisonment, alongside the complete confiscation of his property.

This sentencing is part of a broader, highly effective counterintelligence campaign conducted by the SSU across various regions of Ukraine. In recent cases, the SSU successfully brought down an agent in Chernivtsi who not only corrected Russian air strikes on the city but actively called for the continuous bombardment of the entire western region of Ukraine. Similarly, another traitor who publicly urged the surrender of the strategic coastal town of Ochakiv to Russian forces was recently handed a 15-year prison sentence.

These convictions serve a dual purpose. Firstly, they permanently remove dangerous elements from society, significantly disrupting the intelligence-gathering capabilities of the Russian Federation. Secondly, they send a clear, unequivocal message to any potential collaborators: high treason carries severe, unavoidable consequences. The meticulous work of Ukrainian law enforcement ensures that every piece of evidence—from hidden dashcams to encrypted chat logs—is used to secure a conviction in court. The elimination of Russian spy networks remains a critical pillar in Ukraine’s overarching defense strategy.
