The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine is currently verifying whether any Ukrainian citizens were on board the MV Hondius cruise ship following a deadly hantavirus outbreak, as reported by Ukrinform. The incident, which occurred in the Atlantic Ocean, has sparked urgent diplomatic coordination.
According to the Ukrainian Embassy in the Netherlands, there have been no reports or inquiries regarding deceased or injured Ukrainian nationals on the vessel. Furthermore, the Ukrainian Embassy in South Africa has cross-referenced the list of those infected and confirmed that no Ukrainians are among the patients. Diplomatic officials remain in contact with the vessel’s operator to obtain granular data regarding the manifest and the status of all passengers on board.
MV Hondius departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, on March 20, carrying approximately 150 international tourists. The cruise was scheduled to conclude in Cape Verde on May 4. However, the voyage took a tragic turn as six confirmed cases of hantavirus were identified, resulting in three fatalities. The victims have been identified as citizens of the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
Health experts note that hantavirus is primarily transmitted through contact with rodent waste. While human-to-human transmission is statistically rare, the lack of specific vaccines or established antiviral treatments makes the medical situation on the ship highly volatile. The isolation of the passengers on the high seas creates significant logistical challenges for health authorities.
As the world continues to grapple with global health security, such incidents underscore the inherent risks of maritime tourism. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry continues to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that should any information regarding Ukrainian nationals emerge, prompt consular assistance will be provided. Until the vessel arrives at its destination, strict quarantine measures are expected to be enforced to prevent the further spread of the virus. Authorities are currently coordinating with international health organizations to ensure a safe arrival and quarantine process for all remaining passengers.
