While the virus is primarily transmitted from rodents to humans, recent international headlines regarding a lethal outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship have prompted health authorities to reiterate safety protocols. Public health officials emphasize that although hantavirus is a known entity, preventive hygiene is the most effective barrier against infection.
The primary transmission route in Ukraine involves inhalation of aerosolized particles contaminated with rodent excreta. Mykola Hanych, a representative of the Public Health Center, explains that the most common mistake is performing dry cleaning in spaces where rodents are present. This action kicks dust into the air, creating a direct inhalation risk. Instead, citizens are strongly advised to perform wet cleaning using disinfectants and to wear gloves at all times when cleaning sheds, cellars, or technical premises.
Globally, two main types of the virus exist. The Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) is prevalent in Europe and Asia, including Ukraine, and is typically rodent-borne. In contrast, the Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), caused by the Andes virus in the Western Hemisphere, presents a unique challenge because it can occasionally transmit between humans. However, such transmission is rare and generally requires prolonged, close physical proximity between an infected person and a healthy individual.
The medical community is closely monitoring the situation following the incidents on the MV Hondius. Currently, there is no widely available vaccine for hantavirus, making public awareness campaigns essential. While authorities in neighboring countries like Poland have stepped up sanitary surveillance to prevent importation of the virus, individual responsibility remains paramount. Citizens should remain vigilant, especially when handling household storage areas or engaging in farm activities, and seek medical attention immediately if they develop high fever or respiratory distress following contact with potential rodent habitats. Constant hygiene is not just a recommendation; in the context of hantavirus, it is the primary line of defense.
