The joint response comes amid a sharp escalation in Russian hostilities. The statement explicitly condemned the massive aerial attack on Ukraine on May 24, which featured the deployment of Russia’s intermediate-range ballistic missile, the “Oreshnik,” targeting the city of Bila Tserkva. “We resolutely condemn the escalation of attacks by the Russian Federation,” the joint statement reads. “Attacks on civilians, civilian objects, and critical energy infrastructure are severe violations of international humanitarian law and must cease immediately.”
The escalatory rhetoric from Moscow reached a fever pitch when Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov directly informed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio of Russia’s intention to launch “systemic strikes” on the Ukrainian capital.
