In a significant boost to Ukraine’s medical evacuation capabilities, Germany has delivered a new batch of five highly upgraded MEDIGUARD armored medical vehicles to the National Guard of Ukraine. This delivery, part of an expanded defense contract, aims to protect combat medics and wounded personnel operating in the most dangerous sectors of the frontline, according to a recent report by the defense publication Defense Express.
The modern battlefield in Ukraine is characterized by intense artillery fire and the pervasive threat of unmanned aerial vehicles. Medical evacuation vehicles are frequently targeted by Russian forces. To counter these unprecedented threats, the newly delivered MEDIGUARDs have undergone critical adaptations based on direct feedback from Ukrainian combat medics.
To mitigate the severe threat posed by FPV (First-Person View) kamikaze drones, the vehicles have been equipped with extensive anti-drone mesh screens that cover the majority of the hull. Because these screens and the reinforced armored capsule significantly increase the vehicle’s total weight, engineers had to comprehensively upgrade the suspension, braking system, and wheels to maintain mobility and off-road capability.
The production of these specialized armored ambulances is a result of effective international collaboration. The German company BREMEDIC supplies the advanced medical equipment, while the armored integration is handled jointly by ASC Hardcar International and the Ukrainian company Transformers. The vehicles boast armor that complies with STANAG 4569 Level 1 standards, ensuring robust protection against 5.56 mm, 5.45 mm, and 7.62 mm caliber ammunition.
Inside the medical compartment, the design prioritizes life-saving efficiency. It features secure mounts for stretchers, additional seating and safety handles for medical staff, an enhanced lighting system, and an independent power supply equipped with a 220V inverter to run critical medical devices. A rearview camera system has also been installed to aid drivers navigating through hazardous combat zones.
While publicly available information indicates that at least nine German-funded MEDIGUARD vehicles have been transferred to Ukraine to date, the actual number is likely higher due to the operational security surrounding military aid packages. The life-saving potential of these vehicles is not theoretical. In a notable incident last October, one of these armored ambulances successfully withstood simultaneous strikes from three Russian kamikaze drones. The armored cabin remained structurally intact, allowing the medical crew to survive without sustaining serious injuries. This track record underscores the vital importance of continued Western support in providing specialized armored vehicles to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
