German companies DEUTZ and ARX Robotics have officially launched the serial production of the Gereon unmanned ground vehicles (UGV) at a facility in Ulm, as confirmed by the DEUTZ press office. The first units are expected to be deployed to Ukraine by the end of this summer, marking a significant milestone in the rapid scaling of military technology.
The production initiative aims to provide essential ground robotic support while bolstering European defense industrial capabilities. Marko Gerre, CEO of the defense division at DEUTZ, emphasized that scaling the output of the Gereon systems is vital for meeting the immediate needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. These platforms, designed for versatility in complex combat zones, are becoming increasingly crucial for logistics and autonomous tactical tasks, effectively mitigating risks for personnel on the front line.
The partnership between the two companies, which began in October 2025, focuses on deep engineering integration. The Gereon systems will utilize high-performance DEUTZ power units. Initial production models will feature battery-powered electric drives, with future plans to transition to compact gasoline and hybrid engines to extend operational range. Furthermore, the collaboration involves the integration of the Mithra OS software platform. This system utilizes artificial intelligence to coordinate mechanical components with mission control, significantly enhancing the operational reliability of the drones in contested environments.
This production surge is part of a broader commitment by the German defense sector to support Ukraine’s battlefield capabilities. By moving from prototype development to series production, the German defense industry is demonstrating its capacity to react swiftly to the evolving demands of modern warfare.
