Ukrainian law enforcement agencies have successfully uncovered an organized criminal group involved in the large-scale production and distribution of counterfeit coffee under the guise of a well-known international brand. Official details regarding the investigation were published by the National Police of Ukraine. This case highlights a critical issue regarding consumer protection and intellectual property rights in the Ukrainian market.
According to the investigation, the suspects continued to exploit a globally recognized brand name years after their official contract expired in 2021. To mask their illicit operations, the group simultaneously promoted their own proprietary brand as a cover, creating a complex web of distribution channels including online marketplaces, social media, messenger services, and physical coffee shops across the country. The scale of the operation was significant, covering everything from roasting and packaging to distribution and accounting.
Authorities raided 22 locations, seizing production equipment, packaging materials, thousands of pre-packed bags of fake coffee, raw materials, and financial records. The estimated value of the confiscated goods is approximately 20 million UAH. Crucially, the illicit products were manufactured without any regard for quality control, safety standards, or health certifications, posing a substantial risk to unsuspecting consumers. Part of the group’s business operations had been registered under proxies to further complicate the trail for investigators.
Currently, police are conducting forensic analyses on the confiscated materials to determine the full extent of the harm caused to the brand owner and the health risks posed by the product. Notifications of suspicion are being prepared for the individuals involved in the scheme. This crackdown serves as a stern warning to those attempting to profit from illegal trade practices at the expense of reputable brands and public health. As Ukraine continues to integrate into European markets and modernize its regulatory environment, the suppression of such shadow economic activities remains a priority for the state. Investigators are also working to identify all members of the supply chain to ensure those responsible face full legal consequences for their fraudulent activities.
