Drunk AWOL Soldier Attacks Child With a Knife in Odesa: Suspect Detained

Patrol police detaining an armed suspect in Odesa

A horrifying incident occurred in Odesa when a highly intoxicated man armed with a knife attacked a child on the street. Thanks to the immediate reaction of witnesses and the rapid response of law enforcement, the dangerous individual was promptly apprehended while hiding on a private property. As officially reported by the Patrol Police of Ukraine, the suspect was identified as a military serviceman who had gone absent without leave (AWOL).

The shocking sequence of events began when alarmed eyewitnesses called the 102 emergency line, reporting an aggressive man threatening pedestrians with a cold weapon in broad daylight. Unfortunately, before the police patrols arrived at the scene, the attacker managed to inflict physical injuries on a minor. An ambulance rushed to the location and hospitalized the injured child, where medical professionals are currently providing necessary treatment and monitoring the patient’s condition.

Following the suspect’s description, several patrol crews began thoroughly combing the surrounding area. Police inspectors quickly discovered that the man had attempted to evade justice by scaling a fence and hiding in the yard of a private residence.

When confronted by law enforcement, the man exhibited severe signs of alcohol intoxication and behaved extremely aggressively. He completely refused to comply with lawful orders, utilized foul language, and continued to hurl threats at both the officers and civilians. Given the high level of threat he posed, the patrol officers were forced to use physical force and apply handcuffs to safely detain the suspect and prevent further harm.

During the subsequent background check, investigators uncovered further startling details. The man was an active-duty soldier who had arbitrarily abandoned his military unit. Consequently, the detainee was officially handed over to the Military Law Enforcement Service of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for further disciplinary and legal actions. Meanwhile, police investigators entered the data into the Unified Register of Pre-Trial Investigations under Part 1 of Article 125 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which covers intentional minor bodily harm.

This tragic attack in Odesa highlights the ongoing challenges of maintaining public safety amid a growing wave of violence in the country. A similarly horrific and heavily discussed event took place just days earlier. On Saturday, April 18, the capital city of Kyiv was shaken by a mass shooting in the Holosiivskyi district. An unidentified man armed with an assault weapon ran through the streets, opening fire at random passersby.

The terrorist act in Kyiv resulted in the tragic deaths of seven innocent people, prompting widespread public outrage and grief. Following hours of intense and ultimately unsuccessful negotiations, the special forces unit initiated a tactical assault and neutralized the active shooter. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine later praised the exceptional courage and professionalism of the patrol officers and special forces who managed the crisis.

Law enforcement agencies strongly urge citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or aggressively behaving individuals immediately, without attempting to engage or disarm them independently.
