Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, has officially renounced the Gold Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. As reported on his official Telegram channel (https://t.me/Kyrylo_Budanov_Official/603), this decision follows the Polish leadership’s move to strip Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle. Budanov characterized the decision to revoke the president’s award as an unfriendly gesture that serves the interests of the Russian aggressor.
In his statement, Budanov emphasized that historical grievances should not be used for political maneuvering. He pointed out that while Ukraine respects the historical memory of its neighbors, it remains steadfast in defending its own national dignity and the right to interpret its own history. The intelligence chief noted that using historical disputes as a tool against allies only creates a ‘gift for the Kremlin,’ which seeks to divide European unity at any cost.
Furthermore, Budanov highlighted what he described as double standards in Polish historical policy, questioning why figures like Benito Mussolini were not subjected to similar posthumous scrutiny regarding their awards.
