Ukraine has officially rejected the idea of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder serving as an EU negotiator in peace talks with Russia. As reported by Ukrinform, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha explicitly stated in Brussels that Kyiv does not support the candidacy proposed by the Kremlin.
Schröder’s long-standing personal and professional ties to Vladimir Putin, including his involvement with Russian energy giant Nord Stream 2 AG, make him an entirely unsuitable candidate for any mediation role. His public alignment with Moscow’s interests has undermined his credibility across Europe, rendering him incapable of maintaining the neutrality required for such a sensitive diplomatic position. Minister Sybiha noted that the international community has many more capable and impartial leaders who truly respect democratic values and international law.
The Kremlin’s suggestion is widely viewed by analysts as a manipulative tactic designed to create discord within European ranks. By proposing a figure known for his loyalty to Moscow, Putin attempts to subvert legitimate diplomatic channels. European high representative Kaja Kallas has also publicly stated that Schröder cannot represent the EU in these negotiations. As the conflict continues, Ukraine remains steadfast in its demand for real, transparent diplomacy based on its sovereignty rather than the preferences of the aggressor.
