Ukrainian cyber specialists from the 256th Cyber Assault Division have executed a remarkable operation, turning the Russian military’s reliance on Starlink satellite internet into a lethal liability. According to a report by The Times, hackers exploited vulnerabilities in the Starlink registration system to track and neutralize thousands of Russian military positions. After SpaceX implemented mandatory terminal verification earlier this year to block unauthorized usage, Russian forces—who had been using thousands of illegally imported terminals to coordinate drone strikes—found themselves exposed.
Ukrainian hackers capitalized on this transition by launching a fraudulent Telegram channel masquerading as a technical support service. Posing as experts helping users with terminal registration for a cryptocurrency fee, the hackers collected precise coordinates from the devices. This method successfully identified over 2,600 terminals, pinpointing the exact locations of Russian command centers, headquarters, and drone operating units. These coordinates were immediately relayed to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, allowing for precision strikes that significantly degraded the enemy’s capabilities.
