The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has arrested a 16-year-old high school student in the Kharkiv region for conducting espionage and correcting Russian airstrikes on key military positions. According to an official statement by the SBU, the teenager was recruited by Russian intelligence via Telegram channels while looking for easy financial gain.
The SBU investigation revealed that the high schooler was tasked with locating Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile complexes and radar stations in Chuhuiv and Lozova districts. To execute his assignment, the teenager used a moped to scout the areas, taking photos and videos of sensitive military installations and marking their precise coordinates on Google Maps. In cases where visual capture was too risky, he recorded encoded voice messages detailing the geographic features for his Russian handler.
The teenager’s next assignment involved installing a hidden smartphone camera with remote access on a major highway. This device was intended to allow Russian military intelligence to monitor the movement and estimate the volume of Ukrainian armored columns heading toward the front lines. The integration of such cheap, easily accessible digital tools with human intelligence represents a dangerous trend in modern hybrid warfare.
SBU counterintelligence officers uncovered the operation in its early stages. They monitored the teenager’s actions and detained him red-handed while he was photographing Ukrainian military equipment. A smartphone containing undeniable evidence of his correspondence with Russian operatives was seized at the scene.
The suspect has been charged with high treason under martial law and is currently being held in custody without bail. Despite his young age, the gravity of the offense means he faces up to life imprisonment with confiscation of property. This case highlights a disturbing trend where Russian intelligence services exploit the financial vulnerability and digital naivety of Ukrainian minors, turning them into expendable tools for acts of sabotage and espionage.
