A major special operation involving a high-speed chase and gunfire unfolded in Odesa, as the KORD special forces and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) neutralized a criminal ring. As confirmed by the Odesa Regional Prosecutor’s Office, several employees of a local recruitment center were arrested for extorting civilians at gunpoint. The sting operation, carried out with the assistance of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, exposed a massive extortion scheme, which was later acknowledged by the Odesa Regional TRC. The leadership’s reaction was swift, leading to immediate suspensions within the regional military command.
The Extortion Scheme and Seized Arsenal
According to investigators, the arrested individuals were employees of the Peresypskyi District TRC, who had teamed up with a local police officer to target wealthy locals. The suspects were caught red-handed while attempting to extort $30,000 from a local man.
The group forcefully dragged a former serviceman into their official TRC minivan. Despite the victim having an official deferment and a combat veteran status, the perpetrators ignored his documents. They threatened him with physical violence and unregistered firearms, promising to forcefully send him to the frontlines as a stormtrooper if he refused to pay the ransom. During a subsequent search of the TRC vehicle, law enforcement officers uncovered a cache of weapons, including baseball bats, brass knuckles, knives, and an illegal firearm.
A Well-Planned Sting Operation
The victim, refusing to be intimidated, pretended to agree to the bribe but immediately contacted the SBU. This allowed the security services to set up a trap.
When the suspects realized they were walking into an ambush on Prokhorovska Street, they attempted to flee and physically resisted arrest. To stop the fleeing vehicle, SBU special forces were forced to open fire, shooting at the minivan’s tires. The precise actions of the special forces ensured that no one sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation. In total, five individuals were detained, including four TRC employees and one police major.
Inside Informants and Tactics
The criminal group operated like a highly organized syndicate. According to the SBU, they acted on tips from another TRC employee who scouted potential victims, gathered intelligence on their financial status, and tracked their daily routes.
Once a target was identified, the gang intercepted them on the streets. They utilized two official minivans for their raids. One was used to hold and interrogate the victims while extracting cash, and the other served as a lookout vehicle to monitor the surroundings for police patrols.
Official Response and Legal Consequences
The Odesa Regional TRC quickly issued a statement confirming the arrests. They emphasized their commitment to a transparent and objective investigation, stating that any violations of the law within the ranks of the Armed Forces are unacceptable and that cleansing the system of such individuals remains an absolute priority.
All detainees are now facing serious criminal charges, including extortion and armed robbery. If convicted, they could be sentenced to up to 12 years in prison with the confiscation of all their property. The incident highlights an ongoing internal struggle to eradicate corruption from Ukraine’s mobilization infrastructure.
