Romania has formally approached Ukraine with a proposal to adjust the operating algorithms of maritime drones in the Black Sea, according to official reports from Radio România. This diplomatic step follows growing concerns within Bucharest regarding the integrity of its territorial waters and regional stability.
Acting Defense Minister Radu Mîrțu stated that his ministry sent an official request to Kyiv, suggesting the implementation of an autonomous self-destruction mechanism. Under this proposal, drones would be pre-programmed with software capable of recognizing territorial boundaries. Should a drone accidentally enter Romanian waters—due to loss of communication or technical failure—an onboard microprocessor would autonomously trigger the vessel’s destruction to prevent accidental damage or security breaches within NATO borders.
This initiative coincides with Romania’s broader efforts to bolster its air defense capabilities. Following the discovery of debris from Russian drones near Galați, Bucharest has been actively negotiating with its NATO allies for enhanced surveillance systems. The focus is primarily on acquiring technology capable of monitoring low-altitude aerial targets, which are increasingly difficult to detect and intercept.
Kyiv has responded to the inquiries regarding the June 5th incident in the Port of Constanța, emphasizing its commitment to transparent communication. The ongoing coordination between Ukraine and Romania highlights the complex challenges of modern maritime warfare, where the proximity of the conflict zone to NATO member states requires constant vigilance. By integrating advanced safety protocols, both nations aim to mitigate the risk of unintended escalation as the conflict in the Black Sea continues to evolve. While Ukraine maintains its strategic necessity to combat the Russian fleet, the dialogue with neighbors like Romania remains a crucial component of maintaining regional order and preventing miscalculations that could jeopardize the ongoing international support for Ukraine’s defense.
