Following a massive Russian attack on the night of July 6, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha issued an urgent appeal to global leaders gathering at the NATO summit in Ankara, calling for immediate enhancements to Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. He shared his statement on X, emphasizing that defending Ukrainian children from ballistic terror is the most pressing task.
The scale of the assault was unprecedented, involving over 20 ballistic missiles targeting Kyiv, resulting in at least 11 deaths and dozens of injuries. Minister Sybiha noted that these attacks are a direct message from Putin to the world, proving that his aggression will continue and potentially expand if left unchecked. He argued that the era of soft measures has ended, as such approaches only embolden Moscow to escalate its violence against civilians.
A critical point of Sybiha’s address focused on the availability of defensive assets. PAC-3 interceptor missiles, specifically designed to counter such threats, are sitting in warehouses across the globe. He stressed that these weapons are needed in Ukraine immediately, as the country is currently the only nation in the world facing weekly ballistic missile strikes. “Decisions regarding air defense are needed now, not later,” the Minister stated, highlighting that for Ukrainians, time is measured in human lives.
The diplomat urged NATO leaders to treat the security situation in Ukraine as a direct, present threat rather than a hypothetical one.
