Ukrainian partisan resistance continues to systematically dismantle the logistical backbone of the Russian military machine. In a recent and highly effective sabotage operation, agents of the underground resistance movement ATESH successfully destroyed a diesel locomotive near the Likhovskaya railway station in the Rostov region of the Russian Federation. This railway hub serves as a critical transit point for military cargo destined for the Zaporizhzhia direction in southern Ukraine.
The ATESH movement officially reported the successful operation via their Telegram channel. According to the partisans, the locomotive was entirely incapacitated and is beyond repair. While the direct financial damage from the loss of the locomotive is estimated to be over $150,000, the strategic and operational costs for the Russian armed forces are exponentially higher.
The Likhovskaya railway junction is an essential artery for the Russian military logistics network. It facilitates the continuous movement of heavy freight trains loaded with artillery ammunition, fuel supplies, armored vehicles, and personnel heading directly to active combat zones. By eliminating the locomotive, the partisans triggered a cascading failure in local rail operations. The destruction effectively blocked train movements on this critical section of the railway, leaving multiple military echelons stranded deep in the Russian rear and severely disrupting supply chains.
The timing of this sabotage exploits an existing vulnerability within the Russian transportation sector. The Russian railway system is currently experiencing a severe shortage of operational diesel locomotives, exacerbated by international sanctions and the relentless wear-and-tear of supporting a full-scale invasion. With maintenance resources practically exhausted, the loss of even a single hauling unit represents a significant blow. As ATESH highlighted, every operational locomotive is highly valuable, and the inability to quickly replace the destroyed unit means frontline troops are left waiting for promised ammunition and reinforcements.
This latest sabotage is part of a broader, sustained campaign by ATESH to monitor and disrupt Russian military capabilities. Previously, agents of the movement successfully infiltrated and conducted reconnaissance at the Uralvagonzavod facility in Nizhny Tagil, one of Russia’s primary manufacturers and repair centers for main battle tanks and armored vehicles. Furthermore, the partisan network has actively tracked and exposed the construction of new Russian military bases intended for launching Shahed-type attack drones. Through these precise and coordinated actions, the resistance continues to prove that Russia’s rear logistics remain highly vulnerable.
