A New Chapter with Budapest: Ukraine Prepares Proposals to Improve Relations with Hungary

Kyiv has developed a comprehensive package of proposals to resolve tensions and strengthen bilateral relations with Budapest. This was announced by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, as reported by Ukrinform. The Ukrainian side expressed a strong interest in establishing a productive dialogue at both the ministry and leadership levels.

Sybiha emphasized that recent political developments in Hungary present a new dynamic for Ukraine’s path toward full EU membership. A key milestone in this cooperation was the unblocking of a 90-billion credit facility, which is essential for Ukraine’s macro-financial stability. These funds are vital for boosting defense capabilities, specifically for drone production and winter preparations amid ongoing Russian aggression.

The Foreign Minister reaffirmed that Kyiv has consistently reached out to its Hungarian partners, signaling openness to a fresh start in diplomatic relations. As Ukraine continues to face significant pressure, with the government focusing on military aid and regional stability, normalization with neighbors remains a strategic priority. Kyiv believes that constructive engagement will help remove existing obstacles and pave the way for a more unified European approach.

Furthermore, Sybiha discussed the opening of the first negotiation cluster for EU accession, followed by the remaining five. He stressed that Ukraine remains fully committed to deep reforms and expects the European Union to provide an objective assessment of this progress. The formal opening of these clusters serves as the primary benchmark for Ukraine’s integration efforts.

Ultimately, Ukraine’s focus remains on maintaining its European trajectory while building bridges with all neighbors. By offering realistic and actionable proposals, Kyiv demonstrates its commitment to diplomacy even in the most challenging geopolitical environments, striving to secure the necessary support for its sovereignty and long-term future within the European community.
