67 Drones in One Night: Russia Violates Its Own ‘Truce’ Again

Сили ППО України відбивають масовану нічну атаку ворожих дронів

On the night of May 8, Russia launched 67 strike drones at Ukraine, disregarding its own self-proclaimed “truce.” The official report from the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, available at https://t.me/kpszsu/61569, confirms that the attack involved a mix of Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas, and Parodiya decoy drones. This massive strike exposed the cynical nature of Moscow’s ceasefire proposals, which serve as nothing more than a tactical pause for the aggressor.

Ukrainian air defense forces, including aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare units, and mobile firing teams, managed to intercept or suppress 56 of the incoming threats. Despite this effective response, 11 drones reached their targets across eight different locations, causing damage and debris-related destruction in seven others. The attack demonstrates that Russia never intended to pause its military operations; rather, it sought to secure its own interests while continuing to terrorize Ukrainian territory.

This incident follows Russia’s unilateral declaration of a ceasefire for May 8-9, ostensibly to ensure a safe military parade in Moscow. In response, President Zelensky had declared a regime of silence starting from May 6, warning that any violations would be met with a mirror response. The reality on the ground shows that the Kremlin’s “peace” is merely a facade for continued aggression. The use of various drone types, including jet-powered ones, highlights Russia’s ongoing attempts to overwhelm Ukraine’s air defense systems with quantity and variety.

For Ukraine, this is another reminder that diplomatic overtures from the Kremlin are not to be trusted. The resilience shown by Ukrainian air defenders, who successfully neutralized the vast majority of the threats, is a testament to the nation’s defensive capabilities. As Ukraine continues to face these daily threats, the focus remains on strengthening the country’s defensive infrastructure and maintaining the readiness of its forces. The “truce” attempt by Russia has failed to achieve its strategic goal of a quiet holiday, instead exposing their lack of genuine interest in a peaceful settlement. The war continues, and the resolve of the Ukrainian people to protect their sovereignty remains unshaken despite the barrage of drones targeting their cities.
