A Russian military intelligence (GRU) agent has been sentenced to 15 years in prison with full property confiscation after being apprehended by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in June 2025 while preparing terrorist acts in Kyiv. As officially reported by the SBU, the operative was caught red-handed while moving explosives to secret caches. Authorities seized 5 kilograms of plastic explosives, detonators, and components for improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The investigation revealed a long-standing pattern of subversion. The suspect, a local resident, was recruited by the GRU in 2014. He previously served in the “Iskra-2” terrorist formation, participating in combat against Ukrainian forces, including the battles for Donetsk Airport. After his recruitment, he was illegally infiltrated into Ukrainian-controlled territory to lie in wait for future orders.
By spring 2025, Moscow activated its asset. The agent was tasked with establishing several weapons caches on the outskirts of Kyiv and reporting the coordinates to his handlers via Google Maps markers. Digital forensic evidence, including tablets and laptops seized during the arrest, confirmed continuous communication with Russian intelligence officers.
The court found the defendant guilty of high treason under martial law (Part 2, Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The case was prosecuted under the supervision of the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, underscoring the severity of the charges.
This incident highlights Russia’s ongoing strategy of utilizing long-dormant assets within Ukrainian society to create internal instability. Despite the constant threat of such clandestine activities, the SBU continues to identify and neutralize these networks before they can carry out their destructive plans. Every individual working against Ukraine’s national security is now facing strict legal repercussions, sending a clear message to any remaining collaborators that the consequences for treason are absolute.
