A Russian drone strike in the Kharkiv region has killed a police bomb disposal expert and injured four other people, showcasing Moscow’s ongoing targeting of emergency services. According to the National Police of Ukraine, the attack took place on June 7 near the village of Chystovodivka in the Izium district. The team of specialists was operating under extremely hazardous conditions when they were deliberately targeted while attempting to make the area safe for civilians.
The tragedy unfolded after local authorities dispatched the bomb disposal unit to defuse an unexploded, unidentified enemy drone that had been discovered in the area. While the specialists were performing their highly delicate work on-site, another Russian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) struck their police service vehicle. The blast immediately killed one police officer from the bomb disposal division, while three of his colleagues and a civilian bystander sustained severe injuries. All wounded individuals were quickly evacuated to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment.
This attack is not an isolated incident, but rather part of a documented, systematic Russian campaign of “double-tap” strikes. By deploying drones to watch the sites of initial impacts, Russian forces wait for first responders, firefighters, and bomb disposal units to arrive before launching a second, highly precise strike. This cruel methodology aims to maximize casualties among highly trained personnel whose skills are exceptionally difficult to replace, thereby slowing down the stabilization and recovery of liberated Ukrainian territories.
The deliberate targeting of non-combatant civil defense and police specialists constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian law and is classified as a war crime under the Geneva Conventions. Ukrainian law enforcement agencies have already initiated a pre-trial investigation under Article 438, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violations of the laws and customs of war combined with premeditated murder). Forensic teams are documenting the evidence to present to international tribunals.
As Ukraine faces the monumental task of demining over 170,000 square kilometers of its territory, protecting its deminers has become a matter of critical urgency. The international community must prioritize providing Ukraine with advanced tactical electronic warfare (EW) systems to jam hostile drones, as well as specialized armored vehicles and robotic demining platforms to prevent such devastating losses in the future.
