Financial Standoff: Why Lyon Backed Out of €5m Deal to Sign Roman Yaremchuk Permanently

Ukrainian international striker Roman Yaremchuk is set to return to Greek giants Olympiacos following a loan spell at Lyon, as the French club decided against triggering his permanent buyout option. According to a report by the French sports outlet foot01, the decision was driven entirely by financial disagreements between the two clubs. Despite Lyon’s initial interest in retaining the experienced forward, the high valuation proved to be an insurmountable obstacle in the negotiation process.

The initial agreement between Olympiacos and Lyon included a buyout clause set at €5 million, a sum mutually agreed upon during the loan signing last year. However, upon the expiration of the loan term, Lyon’s management sought to renegotiate the terms. While the French Ligue 1 side valued Yaremchuk’s contributions on the pitch and his tactical versatility, they were reluctant to pay the full €5 million sum. Consequently, Lyon proposed an alternative deal to Olympiacos, offering a significantly lower transfer fee in hopes of securing the player on a discount.

Olympiacos, however, maintained a rigid stance throughout the brief talks. The Greek club flatly refused to lower their demands, insisting that Lyon must honor the pre-agreed €5 million figure or let the player return. For Olympiacos, keeping Yaremchuk or selling him at his full market value is a strategic priority as they prepare for the upcoming European campaign. Facing a firm refusal from Athens, Lyon ultimately decided to withdraw from negotiations altogether, opting to prioritize fiscal caution over the permanent signing of the Ukrainian forward.

As a result, Yaremchuk will rejoin Olympiacos for the upcoming season, where he faces the task of reintegrating into the squad and competing for a starting spot under the current managerial setup. This transfer saga highlights the increasingly pragmatic nature of European football’s transfer market, where clubs are strictly adhering to financial sustainability rules and budget constraints. For Yaremchuk, the return to Greece offers a fresh opportunity to prove his worth on the continental stage, even as his brief French adventure comes to an abrupt financial end.
