Following a massive Russian overnight attack on Ukraine’s capital on June 2, eleven educational institutions in three districts of Kyiv sustained significant damage. According to an official report by Valentin Mondryivskyi, the Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA), the damaged facilities include five preschools, four schools, a vocational school, and a college. This latest wave of airstrikes highlights the continuous threat posed by Russian forces to Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure, specifically targeting facilities dedicated to children and youth.
The damage, concentrated primarily in the Podilskyi, Solomianskyi, and Sviatoshynskyi districts, mostly consists of shattered windows, damaged doors, and compromised facades due to blast waves and falling debris. Mondryivskyi emphasized that despite the scale of the damage, local authorities and municipal emergency services responded immediately to secure the sites and begin cleanup operations.
Currently, city services, in coordination with district administrations, are actively working on mitigating the consequences of the attack. Engineering teams are conducting thorough inspections of the damaged buildings to assess the total volume of necessary restoration works and allocate the required municipal resources. Fortunately, no casualties were reported directly inside these educational institutions due to the timing of the strike, but the psychological toll on local communities remains immense.
According to the KCSA, since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, nearly 200 educational institutions have been damaged in Kyiv alone. Thanks to rapid response efforts and international aid, the majority of these facilities have already been rebuilt and restored to operational status, while others are currently undergoing repair.
The persistent bombardment of Kyiv and other major cities underscores Ukraine’s critical need for advanced air defense and ballistic missile protection. As local communities show extraordinary resilience by rebuilding schools time and again, the international community’s support in securing Ukraine’s airspace remains paramount to preventing further tragedies and ensuring a safe learning environment for Ukrainian children.
