Today, the capital of Ukraine celebrates its historic holiday under extraordinary circumstances. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko congratulated Kyivans and all Ukrainians on Kyiv Day, sharing a poignant message on his official Telegram channel. Klitschko described Kyiv as the beating heart of Ukraine, a city of rich history, unique architecture, and an unbreakable will to survive and remain free. He emphasized that despite the enemy’s persistent efforts to break the capital, Kyiv has stood strong, continues to rebuild, and actively supports its defenders.
To mark the occasion, Mayor Klitschko, alongside Ukrainian military personnel, rescuers, local citizens, and representatives from the European Union Delegation to Ukraine, participated in the traditional “Chestnut Run” (Probih pid kashtanamy). This annual charity sports event, which has long been a staple of the city’s celebrations, took on deep meaning this year, focusing on raising crucial funds for medical facilities and the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The history of Kyiv Day dates back decades. While the official foundation year of Kyiv is established as 482 AD, the formal celebration of the city’s day was initiated in May 1982 to mark its 1,500th anniversary. Regular art exhibitions on the historic Andriyivskyy Descent began in 1984, and by 1987, the last Sunday of May was officially designated as Kyiv Day. This enduring tradition has since transformed from a local cultural festival into a national demonstration of solidarity and cultural pride.
Today, Kyiv’s endurance serves as a beacon of hope for the entire democratic world. British diplomatic representatives have pointed out that the capital’s resilience directly reflects the profound strength of its people. Despite regular threat alerts and air strikes, the city remains functional, acting as the nation’s administrative, economic, and moral core.
