The treacherous mountain passes of the Carpathians have increasingly become a stage for life-or-death dramas as individuals attempt to illegally cross Ukraine’s Western borders. In a recent incident, a Kyiv resident attempting to covertly reach Romania came face-to-face with a wild brown bear, forcing him to seek emergency rescue from the very authorities he was trying to evade. As reported by the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (DPSU), the man was forced to climb a tree to escape the aggressive predator before calling for help.
The incident unfolded during a night-time transition in the dense forests of the Zakarpattia region. The traveler had meticulously planned a route bypassing official checkpoints, underestimating the harshness of the wilderness. Upon encountering the female bear, his survival instincts overrode all attempts at secrecy. Perched precariously on a tree branch, he contacted the emergency services, providing his GPS coordinates to the border guards.
Upon receiving the distress call, officers from the “Dilove” division of the Mukachevo border detachment were immediately dispatched. By the time rescuers reached the coordinates, the bear had moved on. The border guards safely assisted the shivering and terrified man down from the tree and escorted him to the nearest unit. While he escaped physically unharmed, he now faces administrative charges under Article 204-1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses for attempting to illegally cross the state border.
This dramatic encounter highlights a growing and dangerous trend among Ukrainian men attempting to flee mobilization or seek alternative paths abroad. Despite numerous warnings from authorities regarding freezing winter temperatures, rugged terrain, and wild predators, hundreds of citizens continue to attempt these illicit crossings. Carpathian forests are home to stable populations of large predators, including wolves and brown bears, making nighttime trekking exceptionally hazardous without proper equipment or experience.
The DPSU continues to urge citizens to refrain from taking such extreme risks, emphasizing that the price of trying to bypass the law can often be one’s life. The tragic reality is that dozens of individuals have already lost their lives in the mountains or drowned in the fast-flowing currents of the Tysa River. While this particular draft-evader was fortunate enough to have cellular reception and receive prompt assistance, many others who venture into these deep mountain forests are never heard from again.
