The initiative is reportedly overseen by Putin’s eldest daughter, Maria Vorontsova, and his close confidant Mikhail Kovalchuk, the head of the Kurchatov Institute.
The research program focuses on cutting-edge biotechnology fields, including 3D bioprinting of living tissues and organs, cellular senescence delay through experimental gene therapy, and xenotransplantation. Russian scientists are currently working on growing transplantable human organs inside genetically modified mini-pigs, with the first target milestone set for 2030. Previously, Russian researchers claimed minor breakthroughs in bioprinting mouse cartilage and thyroid tissues, though these assertions remain completely unverified by the global scientific community.
Mikhail Kovalchuk has publicly championed these efforts, claiming that future advancements will allow medicine to “repair” and replace damaged human body parts, significantly extending lifespans. However, international experts remain highly skeptical of these ambitious claims. The complete isolation of Russian science due to international sanctions makes these goals even more unrealistic. The scientific community within Russia is currently suffering from a severe brain drain, as top-tier researchers flee the country’s oppressive political climate and economic instability. Consequently, funding projects of this scale under the guise of “longevity” likely serves as a lucrative scheme for the Kremlin elite to embezzle state funds while feeding the dictator’s delusions of grandiosity.
Putin’s obsession with immortality is well-documented. He has previously discussed life extension with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, claiming that modern science could extend human life to 120 or even 150 years. This massive allocation of resources toward anti-aging technologies highlights the paranoia of an aging dictator who equates his personal survival with the future of his regime, prioritizing pseudo-scientific longevity projects over the basic economic and medical needs of the Russian population.
