As the hybrid war rages on, Russian intelligence agencies are increasingly targeting the most vulnerable segment of Ukrainian society: teenagers. According to the National Police of Ukraine in a recent official report, the cyberpolice of the Zhytomyr region recently honored thirteen local school children who demonstrated exceptional civic responsibility by reporting recruitment attempts by Russian special forces. This incident highlights a dangerous trend of using social media and messaging apps for psychological manipulation and sabotage.
Within the framework of the nationwide informational campaign “Burn the FSB Agent” (“Spaly FSBshnyka”), letters of gratitude and commemorative gifts were presented to thirteen teenagers, including six girls and seven boys from Zhytomyr. Russian operatives attempted to drag these minors into illicit activities, promising “easy money” in exchange for committing arsons and sabotage against military vehicles or critical railway infrastructure. Using popular platforms like Telegram and TikTok, anonymous curators sent precise instructions, trying to exploit the financial needs or curiosity of young people. Fortunately, the teenagers refused to cooperate and chose to contact law enforcement instead.
Experts warn that recruiting children is a deliberate tactical shift by Moscow. By using teenagers, Russian curators hope to avoid detection, exploit loopholes in juvenile criminal responsibility, and create a false narrative of local resistance inside Ukraine. For the Kremlin, these youngsters are seen merely as disposable tools. Last year alone, Ukrainian authorities recorded dozens of reports from minors who successfully identified and resisted such malicious online recruitment attempts.
This critical challenge requires immediate and ongoing cooperation between parents, educators, and cyberpolice. Cyber literacy campaigns play a crucial role in preparing youngsters to navigate the modern digital battlefield. The courage and quick thinking shown by the Zhytomyr students set a vital example for youth across the country, proving that awareness is one of Ukraine’s strongest shields against hybrid aggression.
