The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has officially established a new national holiday—Ukrainian Music Day—to celebrate and protect the country’s rich musical heritage during wartime. According to the press service of the parliament, the resolution was backed by an overwhelming majority of 292 MPs. The event will be celebrated annually on the third Saturday of September, serving as a powerful tool for cultural diplomacy and national resistance.
The chosen date holds significant historical weight, directly linked to the legendary “Chervona Ruta” festival held in September 1989. This landmark festival became a turning point in modern Ukrainian history, challenging Soviet cultural dominance and paving the way for the revival of Ukrainian national identity. By anchoring the new holiday to this event, Ukraine emphasizes the historical continuity of its cultural struggle.

Oleksandr Sanchenko, Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Music Industry, emphasized that music is no longer just art but a vital component of Ukraine’s informational defense. For decades, the domestic market suffered from aggressive Russian cultural expansion. Today, reclaiming the sonic space is considered a matter of sovereign survival, helping to permanently distance Ukrainian society from Moscow’s geopolitical influence.
