The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has officially reported the detention of a Russian military intelligence (GRU) agent in Odesa, who turned out to be a priest of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP). According to investigators, the cleric directly corrected a devastating double ballistic missile strike on Odesa in March 2024. This case highlights the ongoing threat of internal subversion, where religious institutions are leveraged by Russian intelligence services to conduct hostile reconnaissance on Ukrainian soil.
The suspect initially drew the attention of Russian intelligence through his active pro-Kremlin commentary in various Telegram channels. Following his recruitment, the priest was tasked with identifying and mapping the coordinates of military and critical infrastructure. Dressed in his clerical robes to avoid suspicion, the agent walked around Odesa, pinning potential targets on Google Maps. He then forwarded this intelligence to a chatbot administered by Sergey Lebedev (known by the pseudonym ‘Lokhmaty’), a notorious collaborator hiding in occupied Donetsk who coordinates GRU asset networks.
Acting on the coordinates provided by the priest, Russian forces targeted a recreational and residential area of Odesa with two Iskander-M ballistic missiles in March 2024. The first missile hit residential buildings, where the corrector falsely claimed Ukrainian military personnel were stationed. Once emergency rescue teams, medics, and police arrived at the scene to assist the wounded, a second missile struck the exact same location. This ‘double-tap’ tactic is a recognized war crime designed to maximize casualties among first responders and civilians.
Beyond correcting strikes on residential areas, the GRU agent targeted air defense positions safeguarding Odesa’s airspace. He also gathered detailed intelligence on a major electrical substation near the city, specifically focusing on its security and physical protection systems. After a Russian strike hit the energy facility, the priest inspected the damage first-hand and reported the results back to his GRU handlers.
The SBU successfully tracked the cleric’s movements, gathered irrefutable evidence from his mobile phone, and arrested him at his residence. The suspect has been charged with state treason under martial law (Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) and is currently held in custody without bail. He faces life imprisonment.
