Russian occupation forces have launched a highly cynical drone strike on the border town of Snovsk in the Chernihiv region, deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure and a local cemetery. According to an official Facebook post by Pavlo Myroshnychenko, the head of the Koryukivka District Military Administration, the attack took place on May 26. Within a single hour, between 12:40 and 13:40, Russian unmanned aerial vehicles struck the town three times, targeting local transport infrastructure and the community’s primary burial ground.
The strike resulted in immediate civilian casualties. A 40-year-old local woman, who was visiting the cemetery to tend to graves, sustained severe shrapnel wounds during the attack. She was quickly hospitalized and is currently scheduled to be transferred to a regional medical facility for specialized surgical treatment. In addition to the human toll, the drone strikes caused significant damage to nearby buildings, and the local emergency services are still conducting assessments to determine the full physical scale of the destruction.
According to the Snovsk City Council, the attack directly damaged the cemetery’s “Alley of Heroes,” a section dedicated to fallen Ukrainian military personnel who died defending the country. Local authorities strongly condemned the act as a clear violation of international humanitarian law. “Even the cemetery where our defenders rest has become a target for Russian drones. This is yet more proof that the enemy fights not only against cities and villages, but against humanity, memory, and the very right of Ukrainians to live on their land,” the city council statement read.
This is not the first time that sacred and memorial sites have come under Russian fire. In April, a similar incident occurred when a Russian drone crashed onto the territory of the National Military Memorial Cemetery, damaging administrative facilities. Such systematic targeting of cemeteries and historical monuments highlights the psychological dimension of Russia’s warfare strategy, which aims to demoralize civilian communities. Cleanup and restoration operations at the Snovsk site will commence only after safety and security services clear the area of potential unexploded ordnance and assess the ongoing threat of secondary strikes.
