In a blatant violation of international humanitarian law, Russian forces launched a targeted Iskander ballistic missile strike on a UN World Food Programme (WFP) humanitarian warehouse in Dnipro on May 25. According to the official press release by the United Nations in Ukraine, the facility stored vital food supplies intended for frontline communities. This deliberate escalation directly threatens the survival of thousands of civilians relying on international aid near the combat zones, showcasing a complete disregard for global humanitarian norms.
The destroyed warehouse held food reserves worth approximately $1.4 million, which would have been sufficient to support nearly 130,000 war-affected individuals. Fortunately, no staff casualties were reported as all employees managed to reach air-raid shelters before the impact. Currently, UN representatives are on-site conducting a comprehensive assessment of the destruction, which includes severe damage to building structures, logistics vehicles, and the stored humanitarian goods. The loss of these resources severely hampers aid delivery schedules to vulnerable areas.
“Deliberate attacks on humanitarian workers who are trying to save innocent civilian lives affected by war are a crime and a violation of international humanitarian law,” stated Richard Ragan, WFP Representative in Ukraine. He emphasized that this was the second time this specific warehouse had been hit, following a drone attack that previously damaged the infrastructure. Over the past 18 months, the WFP has documented more than 84 separate incidents affecting its warehouses, vehicles, distribution points, and local partners’ assets across Ukraine, highlighting a systematic campaign of aggression against aid missions.
This systematic targeting of humanitarian infrastructure underscores a broader, cynical strategy aimed at starving out populations in vulnerable regions. By disrupting logistics chains and destroying food supplies, the Russian military seeks to destabilize the humanitarian response in Ukraine.
