Strategic Strike on Novorossiysk: Ukrainian Drones Target Russian Naval Assets

Удар безпілотників по порту Новоросійськ та кораблях РФ

On the night of May 23, the Defense Forces of Ukraine successfully executed a deep-strike operation against Russian military infrastructure in Novorossiysk, a naval base located deep behind enemy lines. The visual evidence provided by Robert “Magyar” Brovdi, commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces, confirms that both the frigate “Admiral Essen” and a Project 1239 hovercraft missile carrier were targeted. This daring raid also struck the Grushovaya Balka oil terminal—the largest of its kind in the Caucasus, holding approximately 1.2 million tons of petroleum products. This operation underscores Ukraine’s growing capacity to degrade Russian logistical hubs essential for both maritime defense and economic revenue.

The operation involved precision coordination between the 9th Battalion “Kairos” of the 414th Separate Regiment of Unmanned Strike Aircraft Systems and the 1st Separate Center of the Unmanned Systems Forces. While the exact extent of damage to the Russian warships is currently being assessed, the psychological impact on the Black Sea Fleet is undeniable. Commander Magyar noted that even modern warships cannot evade the reach of Ukrainian drone strikes, signaling that the fleet is effectively under constant threat of attrition.

Beyond maritime assets, the operation demonstrated a broad spectrum of targets hit across the occupied territories. During the same period, Ukrainian forces destroyed a Russian “Osa” surface-to-air missile system in Donetsk, struck a drone command post in Oleshky (Kherson region), and hit logistics hubs in the Luhansk region. These persistent, low-cost but high-impact strikes create significant friction for the Russian military machine, disrupting supply chains and forcing Moscow to redistribute its air defense and repair resources.

As the war of attrition continues, Ukraine’s strategy of “deep strike” capabilities remains a critical pillar of its defense. By systematically dismantling the infrastructure that supports the front lines, the Ukrainian military forces the Kremlin to deal with mounting logistics failures and resource depletion. With each successful mission, the Defense Forces refine their tactics, ensuring that no target remains untouchable. This operation serves as a reminder that regardless of the distance from the front, Russian military assets remain vulnerable to the innovative and relentless efforts of the Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces.
