The aggressor state, Russia, has illegally usurped the Soviet Union’s seat on the UN Security Council, using it as a platform for disinformation reminiscent of the historical ‘False Dmitry’ (Lzhedmitriy) pretenders. As reported by Ukrinform, Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Andriy Melnyk, delivered a scathing rebuttal during a Security Council meeting convened by Moscow.
The meeting, requested by Russia following a precision Ukrainian strike on a Russian military headquarters in Starobilsk, saw the Kremlin attempt to frame itself as a victim of terror. Melnyk countered that Moscow has turned the Security Council into a ‘political theatre,’ continuously ignoring detailed international reports regarding documented Russian war crimes and the deliberate targeting of civilians.
Melnyk clarified that Ukrainian military operations are exclusively aimed at degrading the Russian war machine. This includes neutralizing oil refineries that fuel occupying forces, ammunition depots, air defense systems, and command centers. These operations reflect a broader strategic effort to cripple Russia’s logistics, mirroring the success of previous strikes on key Russian energy hubs. The diplomat highlighted that the Russian army routinely utilizes civilian infrastructure, such as college dormitories, to house military drone units, effectively using their own population as human shields.
‘Russia continues to use its unmerited privilege with increasing cynicism,’ Melnyk stated, addressing the assembly. He equated the modern Russian Federation to a ‘collective UN False Dmitry’—a fraud that usurped a permanent seat on the Security Council not through legal UN Charter procedures, but through deception and manipulative tactics.
The Ukrainian representative emphasized that all occupied Ukrainian territories will eventually be liberated. He challenged the members of the Security Council to reflect on how long the international community will tolerate the cynical weaponization of the UN platform by the Kremlin. As the war continues, the discrepancy between Russia’s official narrative of ‘innocent victimhood’ and the reality of its ongoing military aggression becomes increasingly apparent to the global stage, further isolating Moscow diplomatically while its forces suffer significant setbacks on the battlefield.
