A bipartisan group of US senators, including Democrat Dick Durbin and Republican Chuck Grassley, has issued a formal demand to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to immediately unblock military assistance for Ukraine and the Baltic states. According to the official statement from Senator Durbin, the continued delay in distributing these critical funds is undermining collective security.
The joint letter highlights that failing to provide these resources empowers the Russian military machine. The funding package, which includes $400 million for Ukraine and $200 million for defense programs in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, was approved by Congress earlier in 2025. Despite clear directives, the Department of Defense has failed to provide a distribution plan, missing its self-imposed deadline of May 15.
“Ukraine has been courageously repelling Russian aggression for four years, and its military deserves the unwavering support of the United States,” the senators stated. They warned that further delays would not only weaken Ukraine’s defensive posture but also diminish the US capacity to deter broader threats in Europe. Concerns are further compounded by reports suggesting potential reductions in American military presence across the continent.
This intervention follows mounting frustration within the Senate regarding the Pentagon’s slow pace in executing allocated defense funds. Legislators have argued that bureaucratic inertia is no excuse when geopolitical stakes are so high.
