The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has successfully dismantled a deep-cover FSB agent network responsible for coordinating Russian missile strikes and planning terror attacks in Kyiv and Odesa. This operation underscores the Kremlin’s ongoing reliance on long-term sleeper cells designed to destabilize the Ukrainian rear.
According to investigators, the primary operative was an IT specialist from Mykolaiv, recruited back in 2014. The individual spent 12 years in a “standby” mode before receiving orders to activate in February 2024. The agent relocated to Kyiv, tasked with monitoring high-profile public figures, political leaders, and defense sector command personnel. Beyond surveillance, the operative was actively collecting coordinates for precision strikes, including an attempted hit on the home of the Head of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.
The network expanded when the primary agent recruited an accomplice in Odesa. Together, they formed a larger group of informants dedicated to leaking the locations of Ukrainian military units. The SBU apprehended both men in their respective cities, seizing digital devices containing undeniable evidence of their collaboration with Russian intelligence.
Both suspects have been charged with high treason under martial law (Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). They face life imprisonment and the confiscation of their assets. This case serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threats posed by Russian intelligence services, which actively exploit the specialized skills of IT professionals for sabotage operations.
