Latvian leadership, including President Edgars Rinkēvičs, explicitly stated that Latvia does not permit its territory or airspace to be used for attacks against any nation, dismissing the Russian narrative as a clear lie.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Georgiy Tykhyi, underscored that these provocations are part of a broader propaganda campaign aimed at eroding public trust and creating friction between Ukraine and its Baltic allies. In response to these escalatory statements, the Latvian Foreign Ministry summoned a Russian diplomat to issue a formal protest. The ministry emphasized that despite repeated diplomatic efforts to clarify the truth, Russia continues to disseminate fabricated information, which serves as a pre-text for further geopolitical hostility.
Meanwhile, the rhetoric from high-ranking Russian officials has become increasingly erratic. Former President Dmitry Medvedev responded to the situation by making absurd calls to invoke Article 5 of the NATO treaty against Ukraine, following statements from Estonian and Lithuanian ministers regarding regional security. Such comments from the Russian side have been widely interpreted as displays of frustration rather than serious policy proposals.
