The Ukrainian Armed Forces are on the brink of a significant technological shift. Within the next two to three months, domestic laser weapon systems designed to neutralize aerial threats could be deployed on the battlefield. This information was shared by Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Andrii Lebedenko, as reported by UNIAN. The project is being developed through a collaborative effort between military units and private Ukrainian defense companies, ensuring a rapid transition from prototype to operational use.
General Lebedenko emphasized that the systems are already demonstrating success in preliminary testing. The primary focus is to create a robust and reliable tool for countering the proliferation of FPV drones and Shahed-type loitering munitions. The general noted that these laser platforms will prove significantly more efficient than conventional machine guns or automatic cannons, particularly in scenarios requiring precise and high-volume interception of enemy UAVs.
This development is part of a broader, long-term initiative to modernize Ukraine’s air defense architecture. As Russia continues its reliance on saturation attacks using swarms of low-cost drones, Ukraine is actively pursuing asymmetric responses. While this is not the first attempt to develop directed-energy weapons in the country, the current results from testing phases provide tangible confidence that deployment is imminent.
