Russia is preparing for a massive new wave of mobilization, intending to conscript over 500,000 people this autumn to sustain its war against Ukraine. The head of the Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) under the NSDC, Andrii Kovalenko, reported this on his official Telegram channel. The Kremlin’s goal is to offset the staggering casualty rates on the frontline by flooding the battlefield with new personnel.
According to the CCD report, the Russian command has devised a two-tier strategy. Some of the newly mobilized troops are expected to be deployed to the eastern front within just two weeks to act as “cannon fodder” and stop gaps in their defensive lines. Others will undergo a month of training before being potentially deployed to open new fronts of the war. This plan is heavily promoted by high-ranking officials like Sergey Kiriyenko and Valery Gerasimov, who continue to assure Vladimir Putin that sheer numbers can secure a victory.
Analysts warn that the upcoming autumn and winter seasons will be exceptionally challenging. The battlefield is characterized by intense infantry combat, constant drone surveillance, and the widespread use of guided aerial bombs (KABs). Despite the Russian attempt to use human resources as a primary weapon, the Ukrainian defense remains resilient. Experts emphasize that unity and effectiveness are the only ways to counter the numerical superiority that Russia aims to achieve through this mobilization.
Prior to this announcement, Russia held several drills regarding mobilization organization across the Southern Federal District and occupied Ukrainian territories, signaling that preparations have been underway for months. While the Kremlin believes that an extra half-million soldiers will tilt the scales, military observers argue that this strategy ignores the lack of proper training and the low morale of the conscripts. As the conflict enters a brutal phase of attrition, the ability of Ukrainian forces to hold their ground despite the enemy’s massive influx of manpower remains the decisive factor in protecting the nation’s sovereignty.
