Ukraine has reached a significant milestone in its defense industry by successfully testing a new domestic ballistic missile. According to the defense outlet Militarnyi, the tests took place on July 14, the same day the previous government resigned. Former Minister of Defense Mykhailo Fedorov confirmed the milestone while summarizing his tenure.
Fedorov highlighted that the development project underwent substantial technical revisions, resulting in significantly improved precision and a 30% reduction in production costs. This cost-efficiency is vital for scaling up production and strengthening Ukraine’s long-range capabilities. While the official designation of the missile remains undisclosed, defense experts suggest that this could be related to the development of the ‘Sapsan’ operational-tactical missile system, which reportedly entered serial production in 2025.
Since March, the Defense Procurement Agency has finalized long-term contracts with various domestic manufacturers for both cruise and ballistic missiles. Deliveries are expected to begin partially this year, with a ramp-up scheduled for 2026. This procurement strategy aims to ensure consistent supply lines for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, reducing dependency on foreign allies for long-range strike capabilities.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has emphasized that building an independent ballistic missile program is a top national security priority, despite political friction and international competition within the defense market. These programs are designed not only to provide asymmetric capabilities against invading forces but also to establish Ukraine as a sovereign manufacturer of high-tech defense systems.
