Law enforcement agencies have apprehended an attorney in Kyiv who demanded $30,000 from a client under the guise of influencing a court ruling. According to the official report by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office, the lawyer claimed he could secure a favorable decision in a property dispute by leveraging personal connections within the judiciary.
The suspect had promised his client that he could guarantee legal ownership of a three-room apartment and financial compensation for other assets. To add weight to his demands, he insisted that the bribe was mandatory to secure the judge’s cooperation. He was caught red-handed by SBU operatives immediately after receiving the illicit funds during a meeting with his client.
The attorney is now facing charges under Article 369-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which covers the abuse of influence combined with extortion. If convicted, he faces up to eight years in prison with asset forfeiture. This arrest is part of a broader anti-corruption effort within the country’s legal and public sectors, aimed at dismantling schemes that undermine public trust.
In the context of the ongoing war, the Ukrainian government has stepped up efforts to root out corruption at all levels. From illegal influence in civil litigation to attempted bribery involving defense contractors or municipal officials, such actions are viewed as significant obstacles to national stability. Authorities are currently conducting further investigations to determine if the suspect had accomplices, including potential contacts within the judiciary system who may have been involved in this corruption plot. The fight against such “internal enemies” remains a top priority alongside the defense against foreign aggression, ensuring that the rule of law prevails even in the most challenging times.
