A 46-year-old resident of Izmail has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a police officer, an attempt on the life of his partner, and illegal weapons possession. As reported by the National Police of Ukraine, the court found the defendant guilty of all charges, underscoring the severity of the crime committed against law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
The incident took place on August 5, when police officers attempted to pull over a moped driver for a traffic violation. The suspect chose to flee, eventually crashing. Upon falling, the assailant opened fire with an illegally modified firearm, fatally wounding 45-year-old Senior Lieutenant Mykhailo Soroka. Despite sustaining a lethal injury, Soroka managed to return fire, wounding the attacker and enabling his partner to successfully neutralize and detain the perpetrator.
Forensic examinations conducted during the investigation confirmed that the attacker was of sound mind at the time of the shooting. Furthermore, the weapons and ammunition recovered were confirmed to have been illegally modified. During court proceedings, the defendant admitted to carrying a weapon at all times, expressing an explicit intent to use it against police or military personnel should he be stopped. The court dismissed his partial denial of guilt, recognizing it as a strategic attempt to avoid maximum sentencing.
In addition to the life sentence, the court ordered the perpetrator to pay over 142,000 UAH to cover legal and forensic expenses. While the verdict is subject to appeal, the ruling sends a strong message regarding the protection of those tasked with maintaining order in a time of national crisis.
