Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has stated in an interview with Il Messaggero that Russia currently lacks the necessary resources to attack Poland. However, Warsaw remains vigilant regarding potential provocations aimed at testing NATO’s resolve.
Sikorski emphasized that while Poland is not panicking, it treats Moscow’s threats with the utmost seriousness. He recalled that Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine was based on flawed assessments and has already caused massive human suffering and economic distress across Europe. The Foreign Minister noted that one cannot rule out further irrational actions by the Kremlin, even if they have failed to achieve their primary objectives in Ukraine after years of attempts.
Regarding reports from The Telegraph about potential Russian provocations against Poland, Sikorski noted that Warsaw is employing a policy of transparency. “We are sending a signal to the Russians: we know what you are preparing, just as we did before the invasion of Ukraine. By revealing their intentions in advance, I hope we can persuade them to abandon their aggressive stance,” the minister stated.
Despite the underlying tensions, Sikorski remains confident in the security architecture of the region. He pointed out that since the Russian military has been unable to secure victory in the Donbas for over a decade, it is clear that they do not possess the capacity for a successful campaign against a NATO member state. The primary threat, according to Polish intelligence, remains hybrid warfare and covert attempts to destabilize the social and political fabric of the country.
As Europe faces these ongoing challenges, Poland continues to act as a security pillar, focusing on strengthening its own defense capabilities and coordinating closely with its allies. For Warsaw, the focus is not merely on military deterrence, but on exposing Russian disinformation campaigns intended to sow fear and discord within the Alliance. Ultimately, the objective is to maintain a robust deterrent posture that makes the cost of any hostile action by the Kremlin prohibitively high.
