Detectives from the Economic Security Bureau (ESBU) have successfully conducted an operation, shutting down two underground poker clubs that were operating illegally in the Holosiivskyi and Podilskyi districts of the capital. According to the official statement from the ESBU, the illegal gambling business was organized by a group of four local residents, who operated without any state-mandated licenses.
The business model was strictly based on shadow revenue. The establishments hosted regular poker tournaments and cash games where visitors purchased chips with cash, only to exchange them back at the end of the night. The organizers retained a 5% commission, known as a ‘rake,’ from every pot. Investigators estimate that the illegal turnover reached millions of hryvnias.
During authorized searches, detectives seized a significant amount of evidence, including professional poker tables, chips, playing cards, mobile phones, bank cards, ledger books, and large sums of cash in both local and foreign currencies. One of the organizers has already been notified of suspicion regarding the illegal organization of gambling activities. Under Ukrainian law, the sanction for this crime includes a fine of up to 850,000 UAH.
This bust highlights the ongoing efforts of Ukrainian law enforcement to tackle the illicit gambling sector, even while the nation faces the immense challenges of a full-scale war.
