The Unmanned Systems Forces (USF) of the Armed Forces of Ukraine have achieved a major tactical success in the Sea of Azov. According to a statement by USF commander Robert “Madyar” Brovdi via Facebook, Ukrainian forces successfully struck 21 vessels within a 72-hour window, including 19 tankers of the Russian “shadow fleet,” one cargo ship, and a ferry in Kerch.
The operations were carried out by elite units, including the 414th Battalion “Madyar’s Birds,” the 413th Regiment “Raid,” and the 1st Separate Center of the USF. Beyond the maritime blockade, the drones neutralized 53 military targets across occupied Crimea and southern Ukraine. A key focus of these strikes was the Russian energy grid; with six additional substations hit overnight, the total number of disabled energy nodes has reached 50 since the beginning of July. This systematic disruption of power and logistics is a significant blow to the Russian military’s capacity to maintain its foothold in the region.
The destruction of the shadow fleet—a primary vehicle for Russia’s sanctions evasion and logistical support for its occupation forces—highlights a shifting balance of power. By targeting the ports and energy infrastructure simultaneously, Ukraine is effectively blinding the enemy’s logistics chain. This comes on top of separate strikes by the SBU’s “Alpha” special forces on the Dzhankoy airbase, further pressuring the occupation administration in Crimea.
Military analysts suggest that the ongoing campaign by the USF represents a sophisticated strategy of exhaustion. By depriving the enemy of fuel through tanker destruction and paralyzing their command centers via targeted energy grid strikes, Ukraine is creating unsustainable conditions for the Russian military. As the frontline remains volatile, these strikes on the Russian rear are proving to be as decisive as battles on the front lines, effectively eroding the aggressor’s ability to wage prolonged, high-intensity warfare in southern Ukraine.
