Over the past week, the Russian Federation has intensified its air terror against Ukraine to a critical level. As reported by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the enemy deployed approximately 2,200 strike drones, over 1,730 guided aerial bombs, and 106 various missiles, nearly half of which were ballistic. These weapons are increasingly used to target residential areas and critical infrastructure in cities like Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Kharkiv, and Dnipro.
The recent tragedy in Kyiv, which claimed 31 lives and left 102 people injured, including children, serves as a grim reminder of the threat posed by ballistic missiles. Unlike drones, which Ukraine has become highly efficient at intercepting—destroying over 90% of them—ballistic targets require significantly more advanced defense systems. President Zelenskyy noted that Moscow is relying on these missiles to sustain its war effort and terrorize the civilian population.
In response, the Ukrainian government is actively strengthening its air defense capabilities. This involves a dual strategy: maximizing the efficiency of current assets while engaging in high-level diplomatic efforts to secure additional interceptor missiles. Ukraine is currently working through both multilateral international initiatives and bilateral agreements with European partners to develop robust anti-ballistic capabilities. As the President emphasized, every assistance package dedicated to air defense directly translates into saved lives.
This cooperation goes beyond national borders. Ongoing discussions regarding the development of a joint ballistic missile defense project signify a long-term commitment to European security. By securing its skies, Ukraine is effectively building an anti-ballistic shield that will ultimately contribute to the stability of the entire continent.
