The Naftogaz Group, in collaboration with the National Police of Ukraine, has exposed a sophisticated organized scheme involving illegal interference with gas meters to manipulate consumption data. As reported by Serhiy Koretsky, Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz, on his official page, the fraudulent activities were widespread across the country. Currently, two individuals have been notified of suspicions, and one has been detained.
This criminal operation significantly undermined the stability of Ukraine’s energy sector. Specialists from the Gas Distribution Networks of Ukraine are now actively involved in removing the tampered devices to restore accurate monitoring. Koretsky emphasized that Naftogaz is committed to seeking full compensation for the losses incurred, noting that these are not isolated incidents but part of a systemic problem costing the state billions of hryvnias annually.
The exposure of this network highlights the government’s ongoing commitment to tightening control over strategic resources. With annual losses from gas theft and technical mismanagement reaching such critical levels, these investigations are essential for maintaining the integrity of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure during wartime. The company has made it clear that additional investigations are underway, and they intend to continue purging the sector of fraudulent activities that prioritize private gain over national interest. By strengthening oversight and fostering cooperation with law enforcement, Naftogaz aims to minimize leakage in the distribution system and ensure that energy resources are used transparently.
