Following a wave of devastating Russian attacks across Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for an immediate acceleration in the development of missile defense systems, particularly those capable of intercepting ballistic threats. He shared this urgent plea on his official Telegram channel on Monday, June 29. The strikes emphasize the critical need to bolster protection as the war enters a more volatile phase.
The President highlighted the tragedy in Dnipro, where a Russian missile strike on infrastructure resulted in the deaths of five people, with the number of injured reaching 29. Rescue operations are ongoing. He also denounced the deliberate targeting of civilians, specifically mentioning a drone strike on a public bus in Zaporizhzhia, which claimed the lives of three people, including a child. These acts are part of a broader pattern of deliberate attacks on residential areas and energy facilities across Sumy, Odesa, and Chernihiv regions.
Zelenskyy pointed out the inhumane nature of targeting first responders, such as the secondary strikes reported in Nikopol. “The main objective remains strengthening the protection of Ukrainians from Russian terror,” he stated. He emphasized that this is not just a national priority but a regional one, urging European nations to accelerate their own efforts in building anti-ballistic defenses. According to the President, local production of advanced defensive systems and missiles is essential to saving lives.
The nighttime air defense reports also revealed the scale of the threat, with over 100 drones launched by Russian forces. While Ukrainian air defense units managed to intercept a significant portion of the incoming projectiles, the impact of those that reached their targets remains a stark reminder of the limitations of the current protection framework. As Ukraine continues to innovate—partnering with allies to produce drones and other defensive equipment—the urgency of securing sophisticated long-range interception capabilities has never been higher.
