This meeting occurs just days after a major diplomatic standoff regarding Russian drone operations. President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously issued an ultimatum to Minsk, demanding the removal of specialized equipment used to guide Russian UAVs toward Ukrainian cities. By June 22, reports confirmed that these signal repeaters had ceased operation. This concession suggests that Minsk is feeling the heat, attempting to minimize its direct involvement in the war to avoid further international isolation.
However, the Kremlin’s expectations appear to be shifting toward more radical measures. Intelligence indicates that Putin is intensifying pressure on Lukashenko, demanding that Belarus play a more active role in the escalation of the war against Ukraine. Reports suggest that Moscow is threatening to halt vital financial subsidies if Minsk does not comply with its demands, which may even extend to provocative operations near the NATO border.
Ukraine, for its part, remains vigilant. With the northern border being a constant source of security concerns, the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to fortify positions, constructing an echeloned defense system that makes any potential incursion by Belarusian or Russian forces significantly more difficult.
