Former Polish Minister of National Defense, Mariusz Błaszczak, has announced his intention to return the Ukrainian Order of Merit. As reported by the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita, this move follows a similar decision by Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the Law and Justice (PiS) party, who opted to return his Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise.

Błaszczak described his decision as a gesture of solidarity with families seeking accountability and historical truth, stating that genuine reconciliation must be based on facts and respect for victims. These tensions have intensified following a broader diplomatic standoff, which included the stripping of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Order of the White Eagle by Polish official Karol Nawrocki due to disagreements over the glorification of UPA figures.
Despite the gravity of these diplomatic gestures, both Błaszczak and Kaczyński have reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression. They maintain that security cooperation remains a strategic priority for Poland, even while they push for official apologies and the facilitation of exhumations of victims from the wartime era.
